Major museums and forts

Qatar National Musuem

Qatar National Museum

Qatar National Museum built in 1912 as a palace for the ruler of Qatar is located on the Doha Corniche. Actually, the museum is devided into 2 sections: museum and aquarium. Many kinds of precious antiques and ruins can be found in the first section while for someone who prefer marine life, the second one is recommended. In this section, there is the story of Qatar's traditional boat-building medthods, together with the pearl-diving and fishing industry which had an important role for the national economy before oil discovery.

Qatar National Museum is opened everyday from 08.00am to12.00am and 04.00pm to 07.00pm.

Weaponry museum

Weaponry Museum

Weaponry museum is situated in Al Lagta, Doha. This was established as a house of fine collection of weapons and artefacts dating back as far as 400 years. The fine hand made items and the handiwork displayed on the weapons are the testament of the craftsmanship and art that has been lost for generations.

Although the museum is not normally opened to general public, visits can be usually arranged through local tour operators.


Khor al Udeid

Khor-al-Udeid (The Inland Sea)

For lovers who want to honeymoon at a romantic place, Khor Al-Udeid is quite a great idea . This is also called as “the Inland Sea ” and lies in the most south-easterly part of the country and has Qatar's most impressive sand dunes which rise to 40 meters height around bay. At sunrise or sunset, the sun casts dramatic shadows across the amazing landscape.

Doha Fort

This inland sea is a very popular spot for scuba divers and wayfarers, bird watchers, naturalists and for all who want to take in the majestic beauty of the desert. This unique inlet from the Arabian Gulf is also a great area for campers . Overnight stay with the wonderful stargazing in the open desert, that sounds great!

Doha Fort (Al Koot)

Doha fort is so-called “Al Koot fort” . This old building is in downtown Doha and consists of circle, triangle and square towers. Nowadays , it is home for various traditional paintings , ancient sculptures and other artifacts , etc.

In the former times, the makers had designed a funnel to provide ventilation and a cooling effect to the rooms inside the fort throughout the summer. It is open to the public daily, except for Saturdays and Friday Mornings. Admission is free.

By the way , there is one thing that can attract all visitors who come to Qatar, “Souk” or open-air market. If you have a chance to travel here , don't miss this. It is great to see the haggling between buyers and seller. Sometimes, you don't want to buy anything , but it is really fun to see how mad the merchants are.

Qatar is an excellent place to sample renowned Gulf and Middle Eastern dishes although international cuisine makes up a key part of buffet services at hotels and restaurants. Qatari cuisine consists of the standard Middle Eastern fare of tabbouleh (chopped parsley, mint and crushed wheat), byriani (spiced rice mixed with chicken or lamb) and shawarma (slices of grilled lamb or chicken rolled inside a pocket of Arabic bread). Hospitality lies at the heart of Arabian culture and it is common for Qataris to invite visitors into their homes to sample spiced Turkish coffee. Alcohol is only sold in restaurants and bars attached to hotels.
