For centuries, Thailand and Laos have been called “twin towns”. Not only similar culture and related historical background, many traditions are almost the same especially religious ritual like “Heet Sib Song”

“Heet” means “tradition” and “Sib Song” means “twelve months in a year”. Heet Sib Song is tradition in a year. In Luang Prabang, buddhism traditions have been held all year round. For example, in August or the 9th month in lunar calendar that is approaching, if you plan to go there, you are lucky since you will not only be pleased with the exquisite scenery and their life style, you will also admire the celebration of “Boon Khao Pradap Din” and enjoy with traditional long boat racing held in the same day.

“Boon Khao Pradap Din” is celebrated on the 14th day of the waning moon in the 9th month of lunar calendar. That is why some locals call this ritual “Boon Duen Kao” . This celebration is held and devoted to remember and pay respect to their ancestors and the dead with no relatives. On the day before the celebration, women will prepare “Kao Tom Mad” (cooked sticky rice mixed with banana and wrap with banana leaf) to offer it to monks in the next morning.

The celebration will start in dawn. People will put rice, curry, fruits, dessert, and another food including cigarette, and betel nut in banana or lotus leave vessel and place it on earth, under three, home fence, temple fence, or any junction to donate to all dead. After that they will offer food to monks to devote to their ancestors. In this day, at the temple, there is plentiful of sticky rice. So, some monks preserve the rice by dry out and give it to the poor.

After making merit, all people will join in long boat racing festival at Kan river. The unique of this race in Luang Prabang is the period of the festival which is held in the 9th month while the race in other districts is found in the 11th month.

The reason why they celebrate Boon Khao Pradap Din in the 9th month is because it is the time of abundance both food and water. So, all descendants think of the kindness of their ancestors and would like to pay respect to them. In addition, they believe that the ancestors are allowed to be on earth again to receive the tribute from their descendants. Someone believes that the main objective of the ritual is to give food to the poor and tramping animals.

Nowadays, most people always think to themselves first without taking care of the others. Some activities like Boon Khao Prabap Din will teach them to know the happiness of being the giver. Certainly, they may be feel happy to be the giver for a few days and everything is forgotten. But once a year, is it better than never do nothing?
