Vietnam & APEC 2006: Hanoi
A thousand years capital of Vietnam, Hanoi is not only attractive to tourists but also investors. Its charm and business chance let Hanoi gain a huge profit. For this year, Hanoi is chosen to be one of the six APEC meeting places held in Vietnam all

Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam located on the right bank of the Red River. It was established in 1553. Nowadays, this ancient city is almost thousand year-old and becomes the most ancient capital in this region. The population in Hanoi is more than three millions just less than Ho Chi minh City, Thanh Hua and Ngue An

Hanoi is chosen by Vietnam government to be one of the host cities of APEC 2006 and related meetings held in Vietnam throughout the year. In addition, it is also opted to be the meeting place of APEC CEO Summit held on November 12-16, 2006

In the past five years, Hanoi's economy has grown rapidly. The record has shown that its average annual GDP growth rate is 11.1 percent which is higher than national figure. The main factor of this growth is from industrial sector.

Nowadays, there are many development projects in Hanoi to support the economic growth such as Hanoi Metro Rail System, Lao Cai Railways Upgrade, and Hanoi Water Supply projects. Furthermore, the projects of human development, investment and high technology will be planned for the next five years to change Hanoi to become the hub of politic, administration, education, science, economic and international relationship.

For the future economic plan, Hanoi will give priority to three sectors: service, industrial and agricultural.

This will put emphasiis on commerce, tourism, health, training, science and technology, banking and insurance. Hanoi has a plan to be the greatest hub of tourism in the North by giving priority to cultural, historical, and conservative tour.

There is also a special tour for businessmen and conferees. By the year 2010, number of tourists is expected to raise up to 7 millions. 2-2.2 millions of them are considered foreigners and tourist income will rise steadily about 16-18% in Hanoi.

Industrial sector will stress industrial products development such electronics spare parts, communication technology, machinery, textile and food.

To support the growth of service and industrial sectors, projects in the North and the South of Red river are planned. 3,860 ha. In the North will be used as hub of international finance while 7,500 ha. in the South will be changed to be industrial city and commercial hub. Furthermore, there is also a plan to establish 18-20 medium and small size of industrial centers around Hanoi.

For this sector, Hanoi has a plan to do the special zone for agriculture by providing area for 4 agricultural sections:

-Organic plant plantation :13,000 ha

-Flower plantation: 2,000 ha

-Fruit cultivated area: 3,000 ha

-Animal raising area (especially for aquatic animals) : 4,000 ha

These projects will be established at Dong Anh, Gia Lam, Soc Son, Tu Liem and Thanh Tri .

In addition, being the largest foreign bank in Vietnam of HSBC with an investment capital totaling 30 million US dollars can prove that Hanoi is one of the cities in this region where the economic stability is trust by foreign investors.

By the way, Hanoi still faces up to pollutions often found in big cities especially water pollution. It is estimated that number of sewage and waste water discharged into the rivers in Hanoi will increase to 450,000 cubic metres a day far beyond the capacity of the city's wastewater treatment system.

According to statistics of the last few years, number of organic substances can lead to serious health problems of people living in these areas. However, there is a Wastewater Treatment Project with an investment capital totaling 20 million US dollars to break this problem. It seems that we should keep an eye on if this can ged rid of the problem.

The important thing we learn from Hanoi's plan is the harmonized development. Although the target is to be a modern industrial city by the year 2015, Hanoi still gives priority to agricultural sector continuously including culture and environment. Therefore, it can be said that being a hub of economy, tourism, commerce and investment will not be out of reach if Hanoi has an effective management.
