Kimchi: Folk
wisdom of Koreans |
|
In the past, when talking about Korea, Ginseng always first. Now,
not Ginseng anymore because it is replaced by “Kimchi”. What is Kimchi?
Why has it played role in this country?
|
No one really know when or how Kimchi originated but like curry in
India and Camembert in France, it is here, in Korea.
|
Kimchi is a traditional preserved food of Korea using basic ingredients
such as cabbages, radish, onions, pepper powders, garlic marinated in
pickled shrimps and anchovies .It has pungent taste and strong smell.
Besides the taste and smell, it is also a great source of nutrients such
as vitamins, minerals, proteins, amino acids, lactic acid bacteria, fibers,
acetic acid which is believed to help prevent cancer.
|
If you have a chance to try Kimchi ,take it slowly to taste its real
flavour. Like many traditional food of other countries, Kimchi is part
of culture . Kimchi plays a role in Korean life because it presents the
Koreans wisdom and makes them remind to their ancestors. So, every year
people are celebrating with the Kimchi festival. When Kimji season
or Kimjang season is approaching, temporary markets appear exclusively
for the sale of Kimchi ingredients.
|
It requires many hands to prepare Kimchi , so we will see daughters
come back home early to help their mother and sister-in-law. The neighbors
usually help each other, too.
|
To present the friendship, housewives often exchange their Kimchi.
They give their friends a taste of their own unique traditional recipes,
which have been handed down from generation to generation.
