What food you should have while pregnant ?

Pregnancy is the most nutritionally demanding time in woman's life. Your body needs enough nutrients everyday to support the growth of your baby. All the nourishment develop baby needs comes from you, either through the foods you eat or the supplements you take. So here's the low down on eating well during pregnancy.


Vitamins & Minerals

Fruits and Vegetables are excellent sources of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals that protect our body from diseases and infections. The dietary fiber found in fruits and vegetables keeps our bowels healthy and reduces the risk of intestinal conditions, such as polyps and even colon cancers.
Dietary fiber also helps us manage our sugar and fat levels in our blood, not to mention our weight.Try to aim for five or more portions of fruit and vegetables per day.You may choose any kind including fresh, frozen and tinned varieties, salad vegetables, beans and lentils, dried fruit and fruit juice

Carbohydrates
Bread, cereal, rice, and pasta are all great sources of Carbohydrates .These have an important job: giving all the cells in your body the energy they need! It isn't the only bonus you'll get from this food group: you'll also get lots of fibre, B vitamins and some iron.Make them up of your main dish is a good idea.

Protein
Protein is an important component of every cell in the body. Hair and nails are mostly made of protein. It is also needed for the buildup of your uterus, breasts, blood supply, and baby's tissues. Low protein intake is related to smaller-than-average babies who may have health problems. The great sources of Protein are meat ,poultry, fish ,eggs,pulse and dry beans.
Milk and dairy foods
Have milk ,yoghurt ,cheese and other dairy foods to add more calcium.Try to include one pint of skimmed milk per day and a yoghurt or a bowl of milk pudding. Remember ! Low fat dairy products have the same amount of calcium as full fat varieties.

Having too much biscuits, puddings, cakes and chocolate everyday is not good for your health. It will be better to keep your intake of foods containing fat and foods containing sugar to a minimum.


While pregnant you should have more folic acid and an important B vitamin. Folic acid is found naturally in sources such as green vegetables and oranges . It's essential for the growth and health of all the cells in the body. If you have it when you are in the early stages of pregnancy (up to 12 weeks), or if you are planning pregnancy, it assist to reduce the risk of the baby being affected by neural tube defects .


Don't forget to consume at least six to eight glasses of water a day. If your urine is light yellow or clear, you're drinking enough. If it's dark yellow, it's too concentrated and you need to increase your fluid intake.
