PART II

Welcome back to Fashion History. Today, we are going to continue our mission, right? Do not tell me that you forget it. I am quite sure that you do not.Well, it is time to start our discovery of Brunei: The Land of Borneo.

Last time, I showed you the basic information of this country and for this time I will focus on their lifestyle specifically their attires. We can group the traditional costume of this country into 2 main categories:

Ceremonial Attires
Daily Attires
1.National Dress
1.Casual Clothing
2.Wedding Dress 2.Ethnic Costume
3.Religious Activities

Ceremonial Attires
1. National Dress: National Dress or Baju Kebagsaan can be classified into 2 types: Baju cara Melayu for men and Baju Kurong or Baju Kebaya for women.
Baju cara Melayu
Baju Kurong
Baju Kebaya
Composition: Composition: Composition:
- a tunic or loose long sleeved shirt (Baju) - a long sleeved - a long-sleeved blouse
- a pair of loose long pants or trousers (Seluar) - knee-length blouse - Kain Lapas or Kain Sarong

There are 3 types of Baju Cara Melayu: Baju Melayu Telok Belanga, Baju Melayu Cekak Musang and Baju Melayu Begulambir. The two first Baju Melayu are still worn by ordinary people while the last one was said to be worn only by people in Royal Court.

In Brunei, Baju Kurong is worn almost in all social and religious occasions and always worn with headcover called Tudong. Besides Baju Kurong, ther is Baju Kebaya which is also National Dress for women. There are 4 types of Kebaya: Kebaya Panjang, Kebaya Labuh, Kebaya Buntak/Pendek
and Kebaya Bandung

2.Wedding Dress: Someone has mentioned that woman will be the most beautiful in her wedding day. This hearsay can also be used in Brunei because the wedding dress for both bride and bridegroom are very beautiful. Well I will show you the composition of this beauty.

Daily Attires

These all above are the Ceremonial Attire of the country. Next one is Daily Attires: Casual Clothing and Ethnic Costume. For Casual Clothing, men generally wore an ankle-length short called Kain with a shirt of light material called Baju Ambit. For outdoor activities, they always wore a hat call Seraong. For women, they wore Baju Kebaya or Baju Buntak.

About Ethnic costume, today it is rarely seen except during religious ceremonies because the ethnic costume is very traditional and rigid in its form. And because of its low quality material, it cannot be marketable.

Nowadays, the transformation of Brunei costume still happens continuously like other countries. Only 1 saying “Every culture moves with time”

I hope the 2 parts of the adventure in Brunei can help you learn more about this tiny wealthy country. I am grateful for The ASEAN Committee on Culture and Information who are sponsor of the publishing of “Costumes in ASEAN”, the main reference book for this writing.
