After the devastation of Tsunami in South and South-East Asia, one thing that we have often heard about besides the enormous loss is “corpses”, slowly decomposing and difficult to identify who they are. “Formalin” is required to preserve these corpses. Everyone knows “Formalin” as a preservative in mortuaries. What about “Formaldehyde”? Do you know this?
In fact, Formalin and Formaldehyde are the same substance. The difference is Formalin is liquid while Formaldehyde is gas. It is colorless, flammable and strong-smelling,commonly used to manufacture building material and household products.
Naturally, the amount of Formaldehyde in the air is not more than 0.03 ppm.(parts million parts of air) but when exceeding 0.1 ppm., it can effect your health such as watery eyes, burning eyes, nose and throat, coughing, wheezing, nausea, skin irritation and difficulty in breathing.
According to studies, Formaldehyde can cause cancer in animal but there is not enough evidence showing that it can cause cancer in human. However, WHO (World Health Organization) classified Formaldehyde as probably carcinogenic (cancer causeing agent) to human.
In textile industry, Formaldehyde resin have been used to impart wrinkle resistance to 100% cotton and cotton/polyester blend fabric. Nowadays, several European countries are interested in this issue very much. Formaldehyde content of these textile products and other products is strictly controlled. Many manufacturers return to pay more attention to their products. We can see from the augmentation of low Formaldehyde textile products in world market.
The development should continously be done. It is not too late for Thai textile manufacturers to develop the products. Not only Formaldehyde in which we have to be interested, but other harmful substance, too. Keeping an eye on this issue carefully is not nonsensical. On the other hand, you may find a new chance for your business.
